University of West England - Bristol

Bristol sounds like a fully immersive city to live in and study in. There seems to be so much going on creatively which I like. I am not so keen on living in a city, however it is close to the sea! So we will see!

Application status: Conditional offer - Distinction

Pros of living in the city:

- Cultural life.

- Bristol Museum and Art Gallery

- music venues and vibrant street art

- Spike Island, an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design.

- Arnolfini, a leading centre for the contemporary arts

- theatre/cinema auditorium

- best independent art bookshops in the country

- Stunning mother nature meditation places.

- Clifton Bridge surrounding areas.

- The Harbourside & Love Saves the Day Festivals

- Bristol has a easygoing and casual vibe.

- Glastonbury just down the road

- Theres an airport

- 2.5 hours from Bournemouth (2nd home)

- Further up the country to Cumbria (home)

- Brean beach

- stunning countryside spots close

- The Waterfront

- Park Street - boutique independent shops, retail chain stores, and awesome places to eat

- Castle Park - Another great chill out spot during the Summer.

- People are generally incredibly friendly and chilled out

- it has been voted as the UK's most livable city for several years in a row.

- North and West of Bristol because of its quieter neighbourhoods.

- Bristol has a relatively mild climate and a great air quality.

Cons of living in the city:

- First Bus service sucks. Could need a bike?

- Narrow streets

- Medical services.

- is not a cheap city to live in.

- A one bedroom flat in the city centre can easily reach £900. However, if you are happy to commute to work, you can find a 2 bedroom house with a garden for the same price, somewhere outside the city centre.

- Apartment (1 bedroom) in City Centre £884.40

- Apartment (1 bedroom) Outside of Centre £720.00

- Apartment (3 bedrooms) in City Centre £1,502.50

- Apartment (3 bedrooms) Outside of Centre £1,122.50

I really like the sound of the facilities and resources. So much for the students to get involved in too.

After the Applicant Offer Day:

Spike Island Fine Art Studios

The facilities in Bower Ashton Campus

Pros

The activity we did - Sound & Vision - We were split into 5 groups of 7 and given 20 mins to make a video with sound effects, then edit the video using Premiere. We then had lunch and after lunch we had a group crit. This was an engaging experience that gave us what it would be like on a course at UWE.

Big studio space

88% student satisfaction

Arts & Music scene

Gallery next door

Street art

Lecture hall at art gallery

Highly sought after course

Tech lab

Big art shop

Canteen food good at spike

Working artists upstairs

Paid jobs for open days (£80pd)

Job opportunities whilst studying

Cons

Facilities far apart (once a week anything you make at bower you can take to spike in a van on a Friday)

Not a lot of iMacs to use in the studios at Spike Island

3 separate places for studios, lectures & facilities - Would need to bike/walk a lot

Student reps not overly friendly

Competitive

Most people younger than me

Being in a city

The feeling I had whilst there and afterwards wasn't excitement - I'm not sure why?

The large size of the University puts me off and the fact it is spread out.
