In groups, we had to create a fashion piece out of foam material. We had to choose a box of materials to use as accessories and then get to planning and making our pieces. We had two sessions to complete it, 2 hours in total.
Our group began by looking at the materials we had in front of us and brainstorming different ideas for items of clothing that would be good. We chose a long skirt, a poncho and a hat.
I drew out the idea in my book and we went from there. I made a miniature out of the material to see how it could look on a smaller scale. We all felt happy with the design.
We cut up the bigger pieces of material and began putting it round myself to see how it would look. The idea we had was to create an avant garde costume such as one you would see on a catwalk. The skirt needed to have angles and shape to it. We wanted to make pleats for round the waistband by bending the material back and forth on itself.
We then began adding rose gold foil to accentuate the linings of the skirt round the bottom. We loved this idea and it was finally starting to take shape. We used clips and pins to secure it for now.
Katie cut out the head part for the poncho and it worked a dream. We felt it needed some shoulder pads inside but we couldn't figure out how to make them at this point so left that a while whilst we carried on with making the skirt.
I found some snap fasteners in the sewing box and had an idea of sewing them on to the back of the skirt. I placed it up against Katie's body and cut round where I thought it should stop at the back of her. Katie, myself and Dounia began stitching on the snap fasteners to either side of the opening of the back of the skirt. This took quite a lot of our time up, however we loved the end result of being able to put the skirt on and off with fasteners rather than pins.
We then had very little time to complete the accessories on the outside of the skirt. Dounia began folding the material and pinning it so we had a rough idea of how it would be, then I pinned it to the dress. We weren't aloud to use a staple gun or glue, only pins, needles and clips. Therefore we pinned some of it and clipped it all the way round the middle of the skirt.
Whilst we were doing this and with Katie being the model, Ollie made some shoulder pads out of sticky back foam and some computer parts I found in a box. This really brought together a theme for our costume. FUTURISTIC! Tom whilst we were all involved in making the skirt and poncho, was busy making a hat as an accessory. He made it using some recycled plastic and pink ribbon. He threaded the ribbon through the visible holes in the top to tie it altogether. I feel this worked really well. There was also a ribbon under her chin to keep the hat secure on the Katie's head.
Very last minute I felt she needed a top on underneath her see-through poncho made from plastic, so I made a gold foil crop top, tied it round and did a big bow to hang down her back.
Here is our finished product, along with a video of the catwalk.
