Video Editing Workshop - Soviet Montage

By combining Soviet Montage techniques, cuts and transitions I was able to explore new ways of working and experimenting with moving image. This is a new way of working to me as it requires a lot more thought before hand. I shot the same footage and then edited into 3 different storylines from a 1st person perspective; a nice walk in the woods, a psychedelic trip on magic mushrooms and getting lost in the woods.

The 5 montage techniques used in these videos are,

- Metric montage (cuts made according to exact measurements of time regardless of content),

- Rhythmic Montage (rhythm, flow & continuity between shots),

- Tonal Montage (visual/aural characteristic that 2 shots share in common),

- Over tonal montage (abstract, dramatic versions of tonal combining the last 3) and

- Intellectual Montage (Abstract cuts that occur according to concepts & ideas).

The cuts & transitions used in these videos are;

- Jump cut

- defocus transition

- wipe

- cross dissolve

- dissolve

I heavily edited the tones of the 'lost' and 'trip' video to emphasise the mood and try and get across the emotion of the 1st person.
